After Gaza smuggling scandal, IDF launches sweeping effort to rebuild Bedouin battalion

The IDF's 585th Desert Reconnaissance Battalion, composed of Bedouin soldiers, has begun an intensive six-week field training program at Tze’elim, marking a significant effort to rebuild after a period of operational decline and a smuggling scandal. The battalion was without a permanent commander for seven months, leading to disciplinary issues and its removal from its original operational sector. Lt. Col. S., an officer with extensive combat experience, has been appointed to lead the rehabilitation. His approach includes:

• Implementing uncompromising disciplinary measures, including active cooperation with military police and other security agencies.
• Introducing culturally adapted mental health support, including an Arabic-speaking mental health officer and a dedicated day for processing combat experiences. Lt. Col. S. noted, "They fought continuously from October 7... and nobody talked to them."
• Establishing a program with organizational consultants to assist soldiers with civilian issues such as legal cases, land rights, and employment.

These efforts are showing early signs of success, with recruitment numbers projected to increase significantly. Soldiers expressed frustration over stereotypes but hope the changes will restore the battalion's reputation and encourage more Bedouin youth to enlist.
