AG urges High Court to strike down law freezing arrest of Haredi draft dodgers

Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara has urged the High Court to overturn a recently passed law that freezes the arrest of ultra-Orthodox draft dodgers. She described the legislation as "an extreme and clear case of flawed and harmful legislation that does not meet legal standards," arguing it creates a "selective and discriminatory criminal enforcement regime." The law, which bans arrests and enforcement measures against yeshiva students who have ignored conscription orders, was immediately challenged by several petitions citing discrimination. The High Court has already temporarily frozen the law's implementation, and Baharav-Miara is advocating for its complete blockage, stating that the burden on those who do serve has become unbearable. IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir also called the law "inconceivable," asserting it was "clearly and unequivocally inconsistent with the IDF’s needs."
