American Jews face a Democratic Party rethinking unconditional Israel support

American Jews are confronting a significant shift within the Democratic Party regarding its long-standing, unconditional support for Israel. On July 15, nearly half of House Democrats (103 out of 212) voted to cut all $3.3 billion in military and humanitarian aid to Israel from a foreign affairs spending bill, though the measure failed. This vote, described by Professor Ian Lustick as an "explosive" release of discontent, highlights a growing sentiment among Democrats and a segment of American Jews that unconditional support for Israel's actions is no longer acceptable.

"For the good of Israel and the Palestinian people, American policy in the Middle East must change," wrote House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also voted to cut aid, stating, "The American people are rightfully demanding an end to a perpetual cycle of war, and the Netanyahu government cannot maintain its current course." This evolving stance is partly driven by increasing American and Jewish American disapproval of the Israeli government's actions in Gaza following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack. While establishment Jewish institutions remain supportive of aid, some, like the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, acknowledge "genuine concerns about Israel’s conduct." A recent poll indicated that 70% of American Jews oppose unconditional military and financial assistance to Israel, with 51% of those under 35 favoring a complete halt to aid.
