Anti-Jewish hate crimes in New York grow even as violent crime across the city decreases

Anti-Jewish hate crimes in New York City increased by 8.5% in the first seven months of 2026, reaching 205 incidents, even as overall violent crime decreased. Jews were targets in 57% of all hate crimes, despite making up 10% of the city's population. This rise follows a record high in antisemitic incidents in 2024. Recent high-profile attacks include a double stabbing in Manhattan, an assault with antisemitic slurs in Brooklyn, and synagogue vandalism in Queens.

Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon linked Mayor Zohran Mamdani's criticism of Israel to the rise, stating, "Since Zohran Mamdani took office as Mayor of New York City, there has been a troubling rise in hate crimes targeting Jews across the city."

Mayor Mamdani called it "unacceptable" that Jewish New Yorkers are the majority of hate crime victims and noted his administration increased the Office of Hate Crime Prevention's budget by over 800%.
