Anti-Zionism still ravages UCLA. Some non-Jewish students seek answers in Israel

Fifteen non-Jewish student leaders from UCLA visited Israel on a 10-day trip sponsored by the Maccabee Task Force (MTF) to foster understanding and build alliances amidst rising anti-Zionist sentiment on campus. The trip, which included visits to Yad Vashem and Mount Herzl, aimed to counter the anti-Israel narratives prevalent at UCLA, a significant flashpoint for protests since October 7, 2023. Students like Daniel Diercks, a psychology major, expressed a newfound investment in the issues, while Noah Schranz, a Jewish student leader, noted how the trip revealed the deep integration of IDF service in Israeli society, contrasting with accusations heard on campus. Dan Gold, executive director of UCLA's Hillel, highlighted the post-October 7 shift where Jewish students felt isolated, stating, "The anti-Zionist movement is basically telling people, 'You’re either with us or against us.'" Despite peer pressure and some students losing friends for participating, the MTF believes these trips are powerful tools to change perceptions by exposing students to the complexities of the conflict. Participants, including Jack Elginer, a political science major, expressed a desire to promote dialogue and understanding upon their return, recognizing the bravery required to challenge existing narratives on campus.
