Arad residents protest alleged Gur Hassidic ‘takeover’ of city amid rising violence

Residents of Arad are protesting an alleged “takeover of the city by Gur Hassidim,” citing escalating tensions and violent confrontations. The protests stem from municipal elections two and a half years ago, which led to a coalition agreement benefiting the Gur community with control over public buildings and land. Recent clashes, including an incident where Gur Hassidim were filmed attempting to abduct teenagers and one holding a knife, have intensified the dispute. Residents accuse law enforcement of “selective enforcement” in favor of the Gur community. Shlomi Tavachnik, a local resident, stated, “The violence began on the part of the Gur Hassidim and deteriorated into violence on both sides.” The Gur community's growth in Arad is attributed to the need for alternative housing and lower property prices, leading to their expansion into various city areas and the adaptation of public facilities for their needs.
