As schools start in Israel, government pushes for teachers to move up north with NIS 60,000 grant

As Israeli schools reopen, the government is offering a NIS 60,000 grant to teaching staff who relocate to communities within 9km of the northern border. This initiative, a collaboration between the Tnufa Directorate for the North, the Education Ministry, and the Finance Ministry, aims to rehabilitate northern Israel following nearly three years of conflict. Eligible educators can live up to 30km from the border. The program prioritizes teachers in high-demand subjects like mathematics, English, and sciences, as well as kindergarten teachers and educational counselors. Ofra Erlich, a teacher who moved to Metula, stated her goal is to "give some kind of horizon and hope to these children." Yuval Sharon, a kindergarten teacher in Shlomi, acknowledged the challenges of moving to a border settlement, noting, "It's living in a different reality than what I'm used to."
