Assessing Western efforts to strengthen the Lebanese military

Western nations, led by the U.S., are attempting to strengthen the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) to counter Hezbollah, but Israeli observers warn that providing only weapons and training is insufficient. Orna Mizrahi, a senior researcher, emphasized that international backing must address systemic issues within the LAF, including low salaries compared to Hezbollah fighters and vetting for loyalty. She stated, “It is not enough to just give them equipment and weapons; they need help in other dimensions.” Mizrahi also cautioned against forming sectarian units, advocating for a force representing the entire Lebanese population. Major General (res.) Eyal Ben-Reuven highlighted that achieving an effective LAF requires long-term strategic patience and a willingness for the LAF to engage Hezbollah, with American oversight and Israeli-Lebanese military dialogue. Colonel (res.) Barak Ben-Zur noted that recent Israeli military pressure and regional changes have weakened Hezbollah, creating a potential opportunity for these initiatives.
