Babies in Gaza Die Preventable Deaths Due to Medical Shortages Imposed by Israel

Since October 2023, mothers in Gaza have faced severe challenges during childbirth due to widespread destruction of hospitals and critical medical supply shortages caused by Israel's siege. Al-Haq reports that Israeli authorities have restricted essential items like anesthesia, antibiotics, and blood supplies, leading to women undergoing surgery without adequate pain relief or being denied necessary procedures. Dr. Ahmed Al-Afara noted pregnant women suffer complications from lack of medical follow-up and nutrition. Wafa Jahlash, 27, recounted being discharged prematurely after a C-section due to overcrowding, leading to a wound infection. Inas Al-Hilo, 23, experienced anxiety over anesthesia shortages and was discharged early, leading to her newborn's death a day later. Dr. Basel Mohamed, a neonatologist, highlighted the dire lack of incubators, oxygen, and other neonatal resources, stating, "For us as doctors, these cases are extremely difficult because we know that with proper medication, equipment, and neonatal support, the outcome might have been different." He warned that continued restrictions will make managing common pregnancy complications increasingly difficult, leading to preventable deaths for newborns.
