Ben-Gvir ordered shutdown of PA event in Jerusalem’s Old City

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir ordered the shutdown of a Palestinian Authority-linked event in Jerusalem's Old City on August 24, 2023. Ben-Gvir stated that senior Palestinian officials were expected to attend the gathering, tweeting, "by virtue of my authority I can sign an order prohibiting the holding of the event—and that’s exactly what happened!" The Israel Police confirmed they shut down the event after an order was signed by Ben-Gvir and other officials. Police cited the 1994 Law Concerning the Implementation of the Agreement on Gaza and Jericho Areas, which restricts PA activity to its jurisdictional territories, stating that such events "could incite, inflame tensions and harm the unique fabric of life of the city’s residents."
