Biggest factor in MidEast is divide between Muslims who want to ‘accommodate’ and fundamentalists, Leiter says

Yechiel Leiter, Israeli ambassador in Washington, stated at a JNS event in Las Vegas that the primary division in the Middle East is between “accommodationist” Muslims seeking peace with Israel and fundamentalists. He emphasized that this split, rather than Sunni-Shiite differences, is crucial, noting that the Abraham Accords empowered accommodationists. Leiter highlighted Israel's good relations with Azerbaijan and Somaliland as examples of this shift, asserting that “If you’re in favor of accommodation, what’s the first thing you’re going to do? You’re going to make peace with Israel.” He also addressed Israel's presence in Syria, stating it occupies 0.1% of Syrian territory compared to Turkey’s 5%, and expressed concerns about Turkey's regional influence. Regarding Iran, Leiter indicated extensive preparation for potential military action, stating, “We spent months on end preparing.”
