Botox, suits and Israel: Ahmadinejad’s transformation and alleged Mossad courtship

Former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad recently reappeared publicly amid reports of alleged ties with Israeli intelligence, aiming to position him for a return to power. Four senior Iranian officials told The New York Times that he was under house arrest due to alleged contact with Israel, a claim his office denied as "entirely false." The alleged Israeli effort was hinted at by a Mossad-associated Persian-language account. Ahmadinejad's transformation included reduced anti-Israel rhetoric, tailored suits, and English studies, with a former aide stating, "He wants to be the one holding the reins." He reportedly told confidants he hoped to lead Iran with foreign assistance, even suggesting Iran would recognize Israel under the Abraham Accords if he returned to power. Israeli security officials reportedly monitored his growing rift with the Iranian establishment, while Iranian authorities grew suspicious after he sent public letters to Donald Trump and Mohammed bin Salman. Some alleged contacts reportedly began during his 2023 visit to Guatemala, a trip initially blocked by Iranian security forces. Alex Vatanka of the Middle East Institute questioned the timing of these reports, suggesting they might be an attempt to create internal regime tension.
