Britain’s sanctions on Israeli settlements reveal hypocrisy of its ‘occupation’ policy – opinion

The British government has implemented sanctions against Israeli communities in Judea and Samaria, banning trade with settlements and restricting related services. Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband accused "settler terrorists" of "ethnic cleansing," a move Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis called "a dark day for British Jews." This decision, made just before Rosh Hashanah and weeks before an Israeli election, has been criticized by Israeli President Isaac Herzog as interference in Israel's democratic process. Israel responded by closing the British Consulate in East Jerusalem and barring 12 British politicians and activists from entry. Critics highlight what they perceive as British hypocrisy, contrasting its stance on Israeli settlements with its own territorial claims, such as the Falkland Islands and the Chagos Islands, where it prioritizes history, security, and local populations' wishes.
