Buddhist monks, locals protest Chabad House in Sri Lanka amid threats, harassment

A newly opened Chabad House in Hiriketiya, Sri Lanka, faced violent protests from local residents and Buddhist monks last Friday night. The facility, which provides services for Israeli and Jewish travelers, was targeted by approximately one hundred demonstrators who claimed Jews were "destroying the tourism." Protesters blocked access, made noise during Shabbat dinner, launched fireworks, and threw rocks, shattering a window. An Israeli traveler, David Sarosi, reported being threatened and assaulted. Disturbances continued into Saturday night with further stone-throwing and fireworks. Rabbi Yossi Gabai stated, "We are in contact with the Foreign Ministry," and security measures are being coordinated with local authorities.
