California Legislature approves Safe Worship Zone Act, now awaiting Newsom’s stamp

The California Legislature has approved the Safe Worship Zone Act, which establishes a 100-foot buffer zone around houses of worship, preventing individuals from approaching congregants within eight feet without consent. Authored by Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan and sponsored by several Jewish organizations, the bill passed both the Senate (34-0) and the Assembly (49-2) and now awaits Governor Gavin Newsom's signature by September 30. The act aims to ensure people can access their places of worship "without fear of being surrounded or intimidated," according to David Bocarsly, CEO of Jewish California. Assemblymember Bauer-Kahan stated, "California is sending a clear message: everyone has the right to practice their faith safely and freely." However, the Council on Arab and Islamic Relations (CAIR) California opposes the act, arguing it could jeopardize "peaceful protesters and community advocates" and provide religious institutions with special exemptions from public accountability.
