Cancer cases among 9/11 survivors surge nearly 25 years later – report

The number of 9/11 survivors receiving aid for cancer treatment has nearly tripled over the past five years, according to a Washington Post analysis of World Trade Center Health Program data. Approximately 27,300 survivors were receiving aid for 9/11-related cancer treatment in 2026, up from 8,870 in 2021. Cancer now accounts for half of the health issues among survivors treated by the program, compared to 35% in 2021. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani stated, "So many of these New Yorkers are ones who made the decision to run towards Ground Zero, and for that, they have suffered medically, and the city should be there for them." Additionally, a new study will track the long-term health of approximately 25,000 children who were in lower Manhattan or surrounding areas on 9/11, with the CDC seeking researchers for a World Trade Center Youth Research Coordinating Center and a Youth Research Cohort.
