Captain arrested after northern Cyprus ferry disaster leaves 8 dead, 20 missing

Eight people have died and 20 are missing after the Filo Jet ferry sank off northern Cyprus. The vessel, carrying 259 passengers and eight crew, encountered trouble seven kilometers off the coast while sailing from Kyrenia to Tasucu, Turkey. Witnesses reported water entering the catamaran, followed by a violent listing, a bow breach, and an "explosion" before passengers jumped into the sea. Authorities have arrested nine individuals, including the 66-year-old captain, Mustafa Oz, and company shareholders, with some reports alleging the captain abandoned the vessel. A deep-sea search team from Turkey is expected to assist in locating the missing, as the wreck lies over 500 meters deep. Survivors claimed a lack of life jackets, with one stating, "Some people had to jump without a lifebuoy or a life jacket. It was a fight for survival." Northern Cyprus has declared three days of mourning.
