Chicago DSA asks City Council candidates to support anti-Israel boycotts, co-govern with group
Attorney Joe Sabag told JNS that boycott, divestment and sanctions activists seek to get young legislators "locked into positions early on in their careers."
The Chicago chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) is surveying candidates for the 2027 City Council elections on their support for anti-Israel boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) legislation and their willingness to “co-govern” with the group. The questionnaire, dated June 29, asks candidates if they are “anti-Zionist” and support BDS at the municipal level. Attorney Joe Sabag noted that municipal boycott measures are largely “toothless” and “mostly symbolic,” but that BDS activists aim to get young legislators “locked into positions early on in their careers.” Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, criticized the questionnaire as a “loyalty test against Jews and Zionists disguised as progressive politics.”
