Colombia, Israel look to expand cooperation as Sa'ar meets Colombian VP, senior officials

Colombia and Israel are restoring and expanding their diplomatic ties following the inauguration of new Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar met with Colombian Vice President José Manuel Restrepo and other senior officials, including the new foreign, defense, and finance ministers, to discuss deepening cooperation across various fields. This marks a significant shift after former President Gustavo Petro severed ties in 2024, accusing Israel of “genocide” and imposing a ban on coal exports. Sa'ar stated, “Not only will we rebuild our ties, but we will take them to new heights.” Vice President Restrepo affirmed Colombia's commitment, noting, “For Colombia, 2026 will be marked by the deepening and strengthening of its relationship with the State of Israel.”
