Cuban delegation to Maccabiah Games overcomes significant hurdles to reach Israel

A Cuban delegation of 29 athletes faced significant travel hurdles to reach Israel for the Maccabiah Games, a journey that took over four days and involved transit through multiple countries. Led by Hella Eskenazi, vice president of Cuba's Jewish community, the group encountered difficulties due to Cuba's restrictive travel policies and the cancellation of flights to Israel by Air France amid regional conflict. The Maccabi World Union provided crucial assistance, with Eskenazi stating, "We are here thanks to the Maccabi World Union." Despite the arduous trip, the delegation found their arrival in Israel deeply emotional and meaningful, appreciating the safety, resources, and global Jewish camaraderie. Cuba has also achieved competitive success, earning several medals, including two by Eskenazi herself. For the athletes, sharing the experience with Jews from around the world and immersing themselves in Israeli life has been a profound experience, with Eskenazi remarking, "When I visit Israel, I feel like Cuba, like my country. I feel that this is my home, also."
