Darfur redux

Fighting erupted in Sudan on April 15, 2023, between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by Muhammad Hamdan Dagalo Musa (Hemedti). The RSF, formerly known as the Janjaweed, is accused of perpetrating the Darfur genocide (2003-2008), which killed approximately 300,000 people and displaced 2.3 million, a number that has since risen to 12 million amid a severe famine. Accusations against the RSF include sexual violence, female genital mutilation, and massacres, with one 12-year-old girl stating, "Every day they came to rape me." Despite the International Criminal Court (ICC) convicting Janjaweed leader Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-Al-Rahman in October 2025 for war crimes, former Sudanese head of state Omar al-Bashir and others indicted by the ICC have not been surrendered. The article questions the lack of international attention and accountability, particularly from North American college campuses and U.S. government officials, despite both the Biden and Trump administrations labeling the situation a "genocide."
