Dark Knight’s dark brother: Christopher Nolan’s alleged hitman brother

Matthew Nolan, older brother of filmmaker Christopher Nolan, was allegedly involved in the 2005 kidnapping and murder of accountant Robert Cohen in Costa Rica. According to prosecutors, wealthy gem dealer Robert Breska hired Nolan to abduct Cohen, who Breska believed had stolen $7 million from him. Nolan, using the alias "Matthew McCall Oppenheimer," lured Cohen to Costa Rica. There, with alleged accomplice Luis Alonso Douglas Mejía, Nolan reportedly forced Cohen into a vehicle, tortured him for information, and caused his death from a hemorrhage. Cohen's body was found on a banana plantation.

• Mejía was sentenced to 27 years in prison.
• Nolan was arrested in the U.S. in 2009 after a two-year search and was found with an escape kit in his cell, including "31 feet of rope made from bedding."
• A U.S. judge denied extradition for kidnapping and murder due to insufficient evidence, and Costa Rica later dropped a fraudulent passport charge.
• Nolan served a short U.S. prison sentence related to the escape attempt and was released in 2010.
