Detained Myanmar leader met by Red Cross for first contact since ousting of gov't in coup

Myanmar's detained former leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, met with Arnaud de Baecque, Resident Representative of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), in Naypyitaw on Monday. This marks the first public contact with a foreign envoy since her government was overthrown in a February 2021 military coup. Suu Kyi, 81, has been serving a 27-year sentence on charges her allies claim are politically motivated, though her sentence was recently commuted by one-sixth, and she was moved to house arrest in late April. Concerns about her health have persisted, with her exact whereabouts and condition largely unknown until this meeting. The government released photographs showing Suu Kyi meeting with the ICRC representative and cutting a birthday cake.
