Earthquake of magnitude 7.4 shakes Colombia's Choco province, severe damage and injuries reported

A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck Colombia's Choco province on Monday morning, August 10, 2026, with tremors felt as far as Bogota and the Venezuelan border. The epicenter was near San José del Palmar, at a depth of 79 km, according to Colombia's National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD). Choco province Governor Nubia Carolina Córdoba-Curi reported numerous injuries and significant building damage in the capital, Quibdó, stating, "Nos preocupan las réplicas" (We are concerned about aftershocks) and that damage assessments are ongoing. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar offered assistance to Colombia, affirming, "Israel is prepared to assist Colombia as much as required."
