‘Enormous mistake’ to leave NYC because of Mamdani, Jewish leaders say

Jewish leaders in New York City are strongly advising against leaving the city despite recent anti-Israel rhetoric from Mayor Zohran Mamdani and a stabbing attack on a Jewish man. Rivkie Feiner, a board member of the Jewish Federation and Foundation of Rockland County, stated, "We will not allow hatred to dictate whether we remain in New York. Our history is defined by resilience, not surrender, and that will not change now." Rabbi Scott Bolton of Congregation Or Zarua emphasized the importance of strengthening the Jewish community and demanding protection from authorities. Rabbi Chaim Steinmetz of Congregation Kehilath Jeshurun called it "an enormous mistake to give up on New York City because of Mamdani," urging political organization and alliances rather than retreat. While some, like Duvi Honig of the Orthodox Jewish Chamber of Commerce, expressed concern that the mayor's actions might embolden extremists, the consensus among these leaders is to remain and actively counter antisemitism.
