Expectations low as Lebanon, Israel resume talks in Rome | Daily Sabah

Lebanon and Israel resumed U.S.-brokered talks in Rome on Tuesday to implement a framework deal aimed at ending the conflict that reignited on March 2. The agreement, reached in Washington on June 26, calls for an Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon, the disarmament of armed groups like Hezbollah, and the deployment of Lebanese troops. Expectations for a quick breakthrough are low, as Hezbollah rejects disarmament and Israel insists its troops will remain as long as Hezbollah is armed. Lebanese officials are seeking a gradual Israeli withdrawal through a "pilot zone" project, where Hezbollah would disarm and Lebanese troops would deploy area by area. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stated, "We are also very pleased that Rome can serve as the venue for these meetings. In this way, our capital becomes a capital of peace."
