Fire at kosher meat processing plant in Iowa shuts down production ahead of High Holidays

A significant fire at AgriStar Processing, a major kosher meat plant in Postville, Iowa, has halted production and is expected to increase kosher meat prices ahead of the High Holidays. The fire, which began on Tuesday, accidentally started in the laundry room and destroyed at least 75% of the facility, leaving over 600 people jobless. OU Kosher CEO Rabbi Moshe Elefant stated, “The damaged facility means a significant portion of kosher beef and chicken slaughtered and sold in the US will not enter the kosher supply chain,” warning of reduced availability and potential exploitation by unscrupulous individuals. This incident follows a 2008 immigration raid and subsequent conviction of the plant's former CEO, Sholom Rubashkin, which led to a change in ownership to Hershy Friedman, who aimed to stabilize kosher meat prices and improve practices.
