Five dead on migrant boat rescued off Canary Islands, aid group says toll may be higher

Five migrants were found dead aboard a boat rescued off Spain's Canary Islands on Thursday, with three survivors in serious condition and 41 others disembarking at Arguineguin. The aid group Walking Borders, however, reported that survivors claimed 83 people, including three women and a baby, had died during the 27-day journey from The Gambia. Maritime Rescue could only confirm five bodies due to adverse weather preventing recovery. Fernando Clavijo, the Canary Islands regional leader, called for a state policy on migration, stating, "The Canaries cannot get used to or accept as normal the fact that the Atlantic continues to be a death trap." The Atlantic route is known as one of the world's deadliest migration crossings.
