From fake burps to reverse tashlich, new children’s books bring the High Holidays to life

A surprising number of new children's books, totaling twelve titles, are being released for the High Holidays in 2026, a trend noted as unusual by Jewish librarian Heidi Rabinowitz. These books cover a wide range of traditions, from Rosh Hashanah to Sukkot, and are being published by both mainstream and boutique presses. Rabinowitz suggests Sukkot's appeal lies in its family- and environmentally-friendly nature. The new releases include stories about:

• "Reverse tashlich," a modern tradition of cleaning waterways on Rosh Hashanah.
• Apologizing for misdeeds on Yom Kippur, as seen in "I'm Sorry for the Bagel Burps," which features "fake burps."
• Communal sukkah hops and building sukkahs for the harvest festival.

The collection also includes a craft book, "The Art of Jewish Joy," offering activities for various Jewish celebrations.
