German prosecutors have identified a likely suspect in the 1970 antisemitic arson attack on a Jewish community center in Munich, which killed seven Holocaust survivors and injured 15 others. The Munich Chief Public Prosecutor's Office reopened the cold case in April 2023 after a new tip-off from the public. The investigation identified a German man, who died in 2020, as the probable perpetrator. Witnesses described the suspect as an antisemite with a "Hitler obsession" and connections to far-right circles. The suspect was reportedly heard saying he wanted to "set them on fire" shortly before the attack. Due to the suspect's death, legal prosecution is not possible, and the case has been closed.
