Germany’s dangerous erosion of memory

Germany is experiencing a concerning rise in antisemitism, risking the erosion of its historical lessons and responsibilities regarding the Holocaust. Antisemitic incidents increased from 4,886 in 2023 to 8,725 in 2025, with 68% of German Jews feeling less safe since October 7, 2023. Both the right-wing Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) and left-wing parties, while denying antisemitism, are increasingly exploiting anti-Jewish sentiments.

• The right minimizes the Holocaust's significance, suggesting it should not dominate Germany's national narrative.

This trend, fueled by political instability, economic anxiety, and immigration issues, threatens Germany's post-war moral architecture and serves as a warning against the convergence of hatred, political expediency, and historical amnesia.
