Gibraltar names airport for Jewish political trailblazer who was first-ever mayor, chief minister

Gibraltar will rename its international airport the Joshua Hassan Gibraltar International Airport, honoring Sir Joshua Hassan, the territory's first mayor and chief minister, who passed away in 1997. Chief Minister Fabian Picardo lauded Hassan as the "Father of the Gibraltarians and one of the towering figures in our history," whose leadership shaped modern Gibraltar. Hassan, a prominent member of Gibraltar's Jewish community, served as mayor from 1955-1969 and chief minister from 1964-1969 and again from 1972-1987. His daughter, former Jerusalem deputy mayor Fleur Hassan-Nahoum, called it "a beautiful and fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to advance the freedoms and rights of the Gibraltarian people," emphasizing his Jewish identity's role in his public service.
