Gibraltar to rename international airport after Jewish statesman Sir Joshua Hassan

Gibraltar International Airport will be renamed "Sir Joshua Hassan Gibraltar International Airport" to honor Sir Joshua Hassan, Gibraltar's first chief minister and a prominent Jewish public servant. Chief Minister Fabian Picardo announced the renaming on July 7 during his annual budget address, calling it "entirely fitting" for the territory's gateway to bear the name of a leader dedicated to protecting its people and identity. Hassan, described as the “Father of the Gibraltarians,” served from 1964-1969 and 1972-1987, playing a central role in advancing Gibraltar’s democratic institutions and constitutional status.

Fleur Hassan-Nahoum, one of Hassan's daughters, stated that the honor celebrates “a legacy that belongs not only to Gibraltar, but also to the wider Jewish story.”

The renaming acknowledges his extraordinary contributions to modern Gibraltar and his deep connection to the Rock’s centuries-old Jewish community, serving as a lasting tribute to his vision and leadership.
