Google pulls AI generation feature out of satellite maps after fears of misuse, misinformation

Google briefly introduced an AI image generation feature for Google Earth, allowing users to create realistic fake images over real satellite views, but quickly removed it due to concerns about misinformation. The company initially promoted the feature for uses like real estate planning, but reversed course after observing policy violations and public criticism. Google stated, "We know that people uniquely trust Google Earth for a reliable view of the world." Experts, like Hank van Ess, noted that while images were watermarked, these safeguards were insufficient, particularly as watermarks only functioned within Google products. Emmanuelle Saliba of GetReal highlighted that such safeguards "don't change how people consume information," as images are often shared rapidly without verification. Van Ess also warned that the existence of such a tool could allow authorities to dismiss genuine images of atrocities as AI-generated fakes.
