Government approves sweeping overhaul of wounded veterans’ rehab system

The Israeli government has approved a major overhaul of the rehabilitation system for wounded IDF soldiers and security personnel, following recommendations made last month and warnings of the existing system's potential collapse due to a surge in casualties since October 7, 2023. The reform will transform the Defense Ministry’s Rehabilitation Department into a national authority with increased staffing, funding, and independence. Key changes include assigning a dedicated case manager to each veteran, streamlining eligibility procedures, expanding mental health services for veterans and their families, and integrating AI and other advanced technologies to cut red tape and proactively update benefits.

“The plan we approved will provide them with a broad and comprehensive support system,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.

Defense Minister Israel Katz added, “Today’s government decision… fundamentally changes the way the State of Israel treats its wounded.”

The Defense Ministry reported that approximately 26,200 wounded personnel have sought treatment since October 2023, with about 65% for psychological conditions. The total number of wounded veterans under the ministry's care is projected to reach 100,000 by 2028.
