Hamas survived Israel’s military assault and is now fighting for a political comeback

Nearly three years after the war began, Hamas, despite significant military damage and leadership losses, remains a central force in the Gaza Strip due to Israel's lack of a clear "day after" plan. Israeli defense officials repeatedly warned that military action alone would not dismantle Hamas without a civilian governing alternative. IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir stated the military's objective remains "the demilitarization of the Strip and the disarmament of Hamas, by all necessary means." However, without a replacement authority, Hamas has been able to return to vacated areas, reactivate civilian institutions, and continues to pay employees, collect taxes, and recruit new members. This has led to a situation where, despite military setbacks, Hamas is still involved in discussions about Gaza's future, with its leaders meeting international envoys.
