Hegseth believes he can appeal to former President Trump's MAGA base due to his defiant nature and willingness to address social issues. He recently attended the Iowa State Fair while campaigning for a Republican congressman, an event NBC reporter Courtney Kube described as "a place where candidates go and showcase themselves in advance of a big run." This was Hegseth's second campaign event this year, having previously supported a Trump-endorsed candidate in Kentucky. Kube noted that at both events, "he was received well. He was received like a rock star."
