How a disguised Shimon Peres helped pave the way for peace with Jordan

Newly released documents from the Peres Center for Peace and Innovation detail a secret November 1993 meeting between then-Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and Jordan's King Hussein in Amman, which laid groundwork for the 1994 Israel-Jordan peace treaty. Peres, disguised for secrecy, presented a vision for regional economic cooperation. King Hussein expressed a sense of urgency, stating, "Maybe I have only a year or two left. I will put everything on the line." Peres noted growing public support for peace, asserting, "Young people are sick of wars, poverty and the lack of freedom." The two leaders initialed a memorandum of understanding that night, forming the basis for the subsequent peace agreement.
