Human rights groups sue over Trump administration's sanctions on ICC for investigations into Israel

Two human rights organizations, DAWN and Taxpayer Alliance Against Genocide, have filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, alleging that sanctions imposed on the International Criminal Court (ICC) are illegally impeding their advocacy for Palestinians. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Manhattan, claims the sanctions have forced them to censor their work and avoid interacting with sanctioned entities and individuals, including Palestinian human rights groups and UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese. The Trump administration issued an executive order last year targeting the ICC after it began investigating alleged war crimes in Gaza and issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defense minister. Omar Shakir, executive director of DAWN, stated, “The government is violating the constitutional rights of American citizens in order to shield officials of a foreign government who have committed a genocide.” The lawsuit seeks to overturn these restrictions, which the plaintiffs argue have a “profound chilling effect” on their ability to advocate.
