'I have an angel by my side': Miley Cyrus mourns loss of godmother, country music icon Dolly Parton
"The feeling of losing my Aunt Dolly is beyond what feels right to share. Our most sacred moments were private and they'll stay there behind the stage, beneath the glamour & between our hearts."
Miley Cyrus expressed profound grief on Wednesday following the death of her godmother, country music icon Dolly Parton, who passed away from cancer at age 80 on Tuesday. Cyrus, who often referred to Parton as an aunt, shared on X/Twitter that their most sacred moments were private, adding, "I have an angel by my side. I always have." Parton had been a maternal figure and mentor to Cyrus since before her birth, becoming her godmother in 1992 at the request of Miley's father, Billy Ray Cyrus.
- Parton guest-starred as Aunt Dolly in three episodes of Disney Channel's Hannah Montana between 2006 and 2010.
- She guided Cyrus's transition from a Disney Channel star to a Grammy-winning performer.
- The two collaborated multiple times, including a duet of "Jolene" at the 2019 Grammy Awards and performances on "Miley's New Year's Eve Party" in 2022.
