‘I still have dough under my fingernails,’ Virginia bagel shop owner says
One man’s quest for the perfect bagel (or any at all) in his new home, miles from the Midwest.
After relocating to southeastern Virginia from St. Louis, a writer sought out authentic bagels, consulting the Jewish Virginia Beach Facebook page for recommendations. Two establishments received high praise: Baker’s Crust Bagels in Virginia Beach and Yorgo’s Bageldashery in Norfolk.
- Baker’s Crust Bagels sources par-baked bagels from Ess-a-Bagel in New York City, finishing them fresh on-site. Marketing director Adam Cohen noted, “John really believed in this idea of presenting real award-winning New York Ess-a-Bagels.”
- Yorgo’s Bageldashery, owned by Greg Peterman, has been a local favorite for 20 years. Peterman, who bakes the bagels himself, stated, “I still have the dough under my fingernails right now.” The shop bakes 800-1,200 bagels daily, with some customers visiting four times a week.
