IDF acquires amphibious landing craft, weighs future Turkish threat

Israel's Defense Ministry has acquired five new Triton landing craft and received two larger landing ships, INS Nahshon and INS Komemiyut, in 2024, significantly enhancing the IDF's amphibious capabilities for deploying troops and vehicles deep into enemy territory. This strategic acquisition expands operational options, including covert landings, for future conflicts.

• The IDF is also examining a potential Turkish front, given Turkey's significant naval advantage and President Erdoğan's alleged attempts at strategic encirclement. Preparing for such a threat would necessitate a multi-year, fundamental rebuilding of the IDF, especially its navy.
• Simultaneously, the Israeli Navy is expanding preparations for a sustained campaign against the Houthi threat in Yemen, acquiring vessels for extended deployments near Houthi-controlled ports and in the Bab el-Mandeb strait to enable faster and more sustained operational responses.
• The Israeli Navy's northern fleet is currently focused on defensive operations in Southern Lebanon, maintaining vigilance against potential Hezbollah activity using civilian maritime traffic as cover.
