IDF conducts strikes in southern Lebanon as LAF continues to operate in pilot zones – report

The IDF conducted strikes in southern Lebanon on Wednesday, confirming a strike in Mansouri, Tyre. The Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) accused the IDF of "assaults and violations of existing agreements" in Nabatieh, claiming Israeli forces bombed a municipal building, a public school, a healthcare center, a daycare, and private homes, hindering LAF operations in pilot zones. Defense Minister Israel Katz stated, "we are not withdrawing from this security zone."

The United States expects all parties to act in a manner consistent with the Framework they agreed to, and Israel clearly stated that it has no territorial ambitions in Lebanon. A permanent military presence in South Lebanon is not consistent with the commitments made in the framework, or the long-term peace and security of both states.

A US State Department spokesperson emphasized support for Lebanon's territorial integrity and sovereignty, noting the framework includes a conditions-based path for redeployment tied to Hezbollah's disarmament. This comes as a security pilot program, launched July 20, 2026, sees the IDF withdrawing from three villages and transferring security to the LAF, who are expected to clear Hezbollah operatives. However, Israeli officials indicate the LAF is "not doing enough" to disarm Hezbollah, and Hezbollah's civilian arm continues to operate in Zawtar al-Gharbiyeh. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun stated negotiations are progressing but stressed that securing a complete Israeli withdrawal and the return of Lebanese prisoners remain priorities.
