IDF general warns talks with Hamas, Hezbollah lack a clear strategy for victory – interview

Brig.-Gen. (res.) Oren Avman, former commander of the Kfir Brigade, criticized Israel's diplomatic efforts with Hamas and Hezbollah, stating they are "largely ineffective... half-baked in terms of what we will actually achieve." Speaking on 103FM, Avman expressed concern that Israel might be operating under a "false narrative" regarding disarming Hamas, noting that state entities have largely ceased to exist in Israel's strategic reality over the last 25 years. While not rejecting diplomacy outright, he questioned its ultimate goals and whether essential compromises are being made.

"When saving human lives is on the line, especially regarding the hostages following our terrible failure on October 7 - it is legitimate to negotiate even with the devil," he said.

Avman sharply distinguished hostage negotiations from broader diplomatic talks, supporting the former. He also criticized the IDF's situation in Lebanon, likening it to "Home Alone 2," operating without a clear political compass and bogged down in localized battles. He concluded that Israel faces decision-making paralysis and immense strain on the IDF, coupled with a lack of understanding of the reality facing its soldiers.
