In a recent interview, Republican New York gubernatorial hopeful Bruce Blakeman outlined his plans to forcefully protect Jewish communities and counter antisemitism if elected. Blakeman, who is Jewish, stated he would confront New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani over "virulent antisemitic comments" and take action if necessary. Regarding anti-Israel protests, he asserted that as governor, he would have intervened at Columbia University's encampment with state police and the National Guard to end it immediately, stating, "I would not allow the tent camps, not allow acts of harassment or intimidation against Jewish students." He also recounted deploying a robust law enforcement presence, including "tanks, helicopters, SWAT teams," to manage anti-Israel protesters at a March 2024 event in Lawrence-Cedarhurst, emphasizing, "I respect the right to free speech, but when you harass people or try to storm a synagogue, that's a crime." Blakeman also discussed his increasing religious observance, including keeping a kosher home and daily prayers.
