Iran appoints AMIA bombing suspect to National Security Council

Iran has appointed Mohsen Rezaei, a suspect in the 1994 AMIA Jewish community center bombing in Buenos Aires, as secretary of its Supreme National Security Council. Rezaei, a former IRGC commander, is subject to an Interpol Red Notice at Argentina's request for his alleged role in the attack, which killed 85 people. This marks the second time this year Iran has appointed an AMIA bombing suspect to a top security role, following Ahmad Vahidi's appointment as IRGC commander. A 2024 Argentine court ruling held Iran and Hezbollah responsible for the bombing, and in June 2025, Argentina's federal judiciary ordered 10 Iranian and Lebanese suspects, including Rezaei and Vahidi, to be tried in absentia.
