Iran-linked drone attacks target Kurdish opposition groups in northern Iraq

These attacks coincide with the US withdrawal from Iraq and an increase in Iranian targeting of US diplomatic posts in the country. Iran suspects the US and Israel support these Kurdish groups, which formed a six-party alliance in February 2026 to pursue objectives like replacing the Islamic Republic and establishing democratic governance. "Almost 700 Iranian and Iran-linked missile and drone attacks targeted Iraqi Kurdistan between February 28 and mid-April," with around 170 specifically aimed at Iranian Kurdish opposition parties, a UK government review noted, with total attacks now believed to exceed 1,000.
