Iran targets Kurdistan Region in regional escalation, spiking gas prices and tensions – analysis

Iran has expanded the Middle East conflict into the autonomous Kurdistan Region of northern Iraq, following earlier attacks on ships in the Persian Gulf and subsequent US retaliation. These recent Iranian attacks, which have included missile strikes that killed two Americans in Jordan, have targeted Iranian Kurdish opposition groups like PAK and Komala, resulting in the deaths of nine Komala members. The escalation has led to significant consequences for the Kurdistan Region, including the doubling of household gas prices after the Khor Mor gas field suspended production due to security threats. Additionally, US energy company HKN Energy has ceased all operations in the region. Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) leader Bafel Talabani condemned the attacks as a “grave and unacceptable violation of our security and sovereignty.”
