Iranian delegation to be allowed to attend UNGA meeting in New York

A US State Department spokesperson announced on Thursday that a core delegation of Iranian officials will be permitted to enter the US to attend the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) summit in New York this month. The Iranian delegation will face travel restrictions and be prohibited from purchasing luxury goods. This year's delegation is anticipated to be smaller than last year's.

• In contrast, on Wednesday, the US extended sanctions preventing Palestinian Authority (PA) officials and Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) members, including PA President Mahmoud Abbas, from obtaining visas for the UNGA summit.
• The State Department cited the visa ban as a consequence for the PA and PLO's “ongoing activities that undermine the prospects for peace” and glorification of terrorism.
• Abbas was also denied a visa for last year's meeting, addressing the UN via video.
