Iranian nuclear chief blocked from IAEA conference in Vienna following US pressure – report
A lower-level Iranian representative may still address the conference later in the week, but one of Tehran's most senior nuclear officials has been barred from speaking at the opening of the event.
Iran's top nuclear official, Mohammad Eslami, was denied entry to the International Atomic Energy Agency's General Conference in Vienna on Monday due to pressure from the US. Eslami, Iran's vice president for nuclear affairs, had been scheduled to address the UN nuclear watchdog's gathering. Austria's decision followed US pressure to deny a sanctions waiver requested by the UN. This development occurs shortly after IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi stated the agency was "completely blind" regarding Iran's nuclear program since at least June 2025. US Energy Secretary Chris Wright is expected to deliver a warning to Tehran at the conference, stating, "Iran must fully cooperate with the IAEA, meet its safeguards obligations, and provide the access necessary for the agency to do its job."
